The Togo Story

[object Object]

In the winter of 1925, Nome, AK was struck by a deadly diphtheria outbreak that threatened the entire city. With the city’s port completely closed by ice, the only way to deliver lifesaving antitoxin was by a 674 mile sled dog relay through temperatures as low as 62 degrees below zero. A total of 20 mushers and countless dogs made the perilous journey that ultimately delivered 300,000 vials of serum to Nome. The lead dog who ran the final leg of the relay, Balto, was hailed as a hero and even had a statue dedicated in his honor in Central Park. But it was another dog, Togo, who carried the majority of the burden and made the relay a success. Covering over 270 miles of the most dangerous stretches of Iditarod Trail, Togo was the unsung hero of the day.

“The dog that often gets credit for eventually saving the town is Balto, but he just happened to run the last, 55 miles leg in the race. The sled dog who did the lion's share of the work was Togo. His journey, fraught with white-out storms, was the longest by 200 miles and included a traverse across perilous Norton Sound – where he saved his team and driver in a courageous swim through ice floes.”
